A richly gilt-stamped Edwardian binding featuring the first appearance of C.E. Brock's full suite of watercolor illustrations.

Edition: First "English Idylls" edition, first impression, with 1907 on the title page and the tissue guard present (later reprints lack the date and/or guard), cloth issue (also issued in vellum). Lacking the scarce jacket. The novel was originally published nearly a century earlier in 1813. In 1898, J.M. Dent leveraged new technology to offer the first color illustrated Pride and Prejudice, which included 6 plates by Charles and Henry Brock. This edition is notable for the first appearance of Charles E. Brock’s expanded suite of 24 watercolor illustrations and its elaborate gilt Art Nouveau design. (Gilson E114)
Condition and Description: Octavo (7.7" x 5"), pale green glossy cloth, lavishly stamped in floral-themed gilt to the front board and spine, 336 pp. Top edge gilt; fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. Includes a tissue-guarded frontispiece and and all 23 additional captioned illustration plates on art paper by C.E. Brock. The design, combining vertical floral repetition and delicate linework, exemplifies Edwardian decorative binding. Mild handling wear to the boards; gilt bright; black mark to rear board. Hinges cracking but reglued and now sturdy. Internal binding secure with occasional instances of slight over-opening. Tanning to the free endpapers. Price of book at publication (6/-) penciled to the verso of the front free endpaper and contemporary owner’s name in ink to the first blank leaf (“Gertrude W. Wright. / 1914.”); text otherwise unmarked. Tissue guard foxed.
