Condition and Description: Octavo, black cloth spine stamped in gilt, cream paper boards with gilt monogram, 479 pp. Light wear and soiling to the boards. Upper-front tip slightly worn through. Faint discoloration along the length of the joint cloth. Faint Random House remainder mark to the top edge. Hinges and binding tight. Pages unmarked, with no writing or underlining. Dust jacket with edge wear, scratching, and a tear to the upper-front fold, which lays flat under the archival mylar.

Suttree is a semi-autobiographical novel set in 1950s Knoxville, Tennessee, unfolding over four years as Cornelius Suttree rejects his privileged background to live alone on a houseboat and fish the Tennessee River among the city’s outcasts. Written over roughly twenty years, the novel marks a sharp break from McCarthy’s earlier fiction. Whereas his earlier books are lean, grim, linear, and rooted in isolated Appalachian settings,Suttreeis urban, episodic, expansive, and openly comic. It stands as the capstone of McCarthy’s Tennessee period.
