Edition: Fourth British edition, the first to contain any illustrations, and the first to bear Jane Austen’s name on the title page (previously, the book was credited only to “The author of Sense and Sensibility”). Preceded by the first two editions (1813) and the third edition (1817), with no reprints in Great Britain for the fifteen years that followed. Issued in a single volume as part of Bentley’s series of Standard Novels (No. XXX), but retaining the two-volume division of the third edition. (Gilson D5)
Condition and Description: Octavo, contemporarily rebound in red leather and marbled paper boards, leather tooled in gilt and in blind, edges marbled, gray endpapers, 340 pp. Contains a series title page for Bentley’s Standard Novels and two pages bearing engraved illustrations, the frontispiece and a vignette title page. An additional printed title page follows, amounting to three total title pages, as issued. Leather rubbed and scuffed; dark stain to the leather of the front board near the joint; corners exposed; gilt remains legible; rubbing and some losses to the marbled paper on the boards and edges. Hinges secure. Creasing to rear pastedown and marbled board. Cracking to the gutters at the series title page and at p. 337, with less significant instances within gatherings B-D, which are also slightly proud. Tear to upper corner of p. 37. Previous owners name to the second blank leaf (“Mary Forster”), in what appears to be a nineteenth century hand. Frontispiece and vignette title page foxed. Handling wear and occasional minor foxing and staining to the pages.
