Edition: First Peacock edition, first impression, British issue. Title page dated 1894 and copyright page without a printing statement, as called for (later printings would be so stated). One of 11,605 copies. Originally published in 1813, Pride and Prejudice was sparsely illustrated throughout the nineteenth century, with various editions containing only up to six illustrations total. This 1894 edition was the first to be fully illustrated, integrating a full 160 drawings by Hugh Thomson into the text. (Gilson E78)
Condition and Description: Octavo (~7.5" x 5"), blue-green cloth, front board and spine elaborately stamped in gilt, all edges gilt, dark blue coated endpapers, frontispiece with tissue guard, 476 pp. Preface by George Saintsbury. As with all copies, a facsimile signature and note by Thomson is on the leaf facing the copyright page. A sturdy and attractive copy. Recased, with very subtle repair to the gutters, spine ends, and the upper inch of the front joint. Hinges and binding quite firm. Light rubbing to the boards, a few handling marks, and a couple of small stains to the rear board. Gilt bright. Edges of the text block a little rubbed. Slight spline lean. Small bookseller ticket to the front pastedown. Price of the book at the time of publication penciled to the verso of the front free endpaper ("6/-"). Christmas gift inscription in ink to the second blank, reading "Catherine Herbert Fullerton / Xmas 1894." No other writing or prior owner markings. Moderate foxing to the preliminary and terminal leaves. Interior pages largely clear, with occasional minor stains and instances of foxing.
Provenance: Catherine Herbert Fullerton (1875-1942), who later took the surname of her husband after her wedding in 1898 to the British Olympian athlete, Lt. Henry Alan Leeke (1879-1915).
