Publisher and Year: New York: Random House, 1936
Edition: First edition, first printing, with the title page dated 1936 and without a printing statement on the copyright page, as called for (later printings would be stated directly). In an original dust jacket retaining the price of $2.50 on the front flap.
Condition and Description: Octavo, 8.25” x 5.75”, publisher’s black cloth stamped in red and gilt, top edge dyed red, map tipped-in at the rear, 384 pp. Cloth a little soiled and with mild shelf wear; gilt fairly bright; top edge faded; endpapers at the front hinge very lightly splitting but the hinge remains structurally sound; internal binding firm. Blind-debossed owner’s stamp to the title/copyright leaf and p. 100. No other prior owner’s markings. Pages lightly tanned and have occasional minor handling wear. Dust jacket rubbed and with shallow chips and short closed tears to the extremities; 1.5” split to the bottom of the rear joint; three small and old tape repairs to the verso; vertical creases and toning to the spine; staining (mainly to the rear panel); and offsetting from another jacket’s design onto the rear panel. Housed in archival mylar.
