Edition: First edition, first printing, with no statement of printing on the copyright page (later printings would be stated directly), and the essential "Colonial Press" imprint on the copyright page (absent in a much later and misleading book club edition). In a first-issue dust jacket priced $3.95 and lacking a printing statement on the front flap (added in the second printing).
Condition and Description: Octavo, black cloth lettered in white, top edge dyed red, 310 pp. An especially attractive and sound copy of the book, with bright lettering and just a trifle of wear to the boards. Tight hinges and binding. Clean pages, with no prior owner’s markings. Dust jacket with a somewhat wavy appearance and creasing to the top edge (both probably resulting from an older mylar cover that was fit too snugly); light rubbing to the surface; wear and small losses to the extremities; and small black stains to the flaps, verso of the extremities, and recto of the spine ends (hardly noticeable against the black ink). Housed in a removable mylar cover.
