First American edition of Dostoevsky’s masterpiece
Publisher and Year: New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., 1886
Edition: First American edition, first printing, with the title page dated 1886 and the presumed first state of the advertisement leaf at the rear with two of Dostoevsky’s other works listed as “in press.” Bound in the publisher’s brown cloth (also found in other colors with no known priority). Published in October and preceded in English by the first British edition issued in April of that year. Anonymously translated from the first French edition of 1884. (Line, p. 17)
Condition and Description: Octavo, publisher’s brown cloth stamped in gilt and red, frontispiece of the author with tissue guard, floral endpapers, 456 pp. (+1 p. advertisements). Rebacked, with the original cloth laid down, and hinges discreetly repaired. Binding now tight and secure. Cloth rubbed and stained. Extremities bumped. Insect nibbling to the top edge of the text block, with small loss to the upper margin of the front free endpaper through the first 50 numbered pages (decreasing in severity throughout the range), and to the spine, with losses to the pigment, a few small areas of the cloth, and some portions of the gilt stamping (affected areas locally in-painted). Loss of some of the gilt lettering of the publisher imprint at the spine foot. Previous owner’s name in pencil to the verso of the frontispiece (“Mrs E-Mac Nichols / Citronella / Ala”), with the pressure leaving a faint impression on the subsequent tissue guard; else clear. Tear to title page, not affecting the text. Tissue repair to a small portion of the front free endpaper and the fore-edge margin of p. 6. Pages tanned and with occasional minor stains and typical handling wear throughout, such as corner creases. Small stain to upper margin of pp. 161 - 231. Pressed clovers are present in several places within the text, not affecting the pages.
